Recessionista post

Yes, so zak has came up with an ingenious plan to save up!

I have challenged my friend to a “Recessionista; Thriftlicious!” (i know, that’s an incredibly corny term, I’ll try to make better of it later)

Yes, with the recession setting in, market shares getting lower and lower while living expenses getting higher and higher, you just have to find ways to cut corners and save up a little bit more. And with us girls using up a great deal of our money on clothes, bags and make up, I decided that we should cut down on splurging!

How to?

It sounds easy, but it will be difficult to follow:

Spend only S$50 on shopping every month.

Of course, some of you who don’t buy many clothes/shoes/ accessories will not have many issues with this; but I bet my girlfriend will. LOL! Ok, just certain things that you want to take into consideration if you decide to join in:

- Spending VS Splurging – The difference

You can spend over 100 bucks on good jeans, great shoes that you just KNOW you will be wearing for a long long long time. Don’t save up for like 3 months to get yourself jeans and then curse me for it; read this first I’m tellin ya! Classic pieces (like jeans as mentioned, or watches) are not counted. Also, I would probably not let 5 inch heels make the cut for this; why in the world do you need to wear 5 inch heels to work every single day?

- The standard protest: “S$50? Are you insane? Just a top will set me back by that amount!”

Well, take a page out of our textbooks; go to thrift stores, Bugis Village… I know this sounds terribly auntie (to some), but for me I personally ransack sales racks sometimes. And today I got myself a top from FourSkin priced @ S$11.95. The original price tag? S$39.90. A steal I tell you, a steal.

- “Is make up part of this too?”

Staples don’t count. Like when your powder runs out or your daily foundation.. mascara..lip balm..you know, the usual stuff that you know that if you don’t put em on you don’t step out of the house? Those are fine.

Things that matter: Are you sure you want to run out and buy the latest mascara that is priced @ “Idunnohowexpensivemascaracanget” price? Are you serious? Do you really need to buy 4 different types of mascara for 1 pair of eyelashes? OR 10 different shades of lipstick in various shades of cool to warm reds? Again; are you serious?!

Basically, those are pretty general guidelines to begin with this thrift game; I think it’s great cause:

then you will start to ponder over whether you should be buying certain items instead of just grabbing them off the shelves. How much are YOU in control of YOUR spending?

You will learn how to mix and match better with whatever clothes are in your wardrobe. I dunno about you if you have ever been placed in a similar diposition;
You buy a nice top.
Then you buy a bottom to match that nice top.
Then you buy shoes to match the nice top and the bottom.
Then you buy a handbag to match the nice top, bottom and the shoes.
Then you buy accessories to match the nice top, bottom, shoes and the handbag.
Then you buy makeup that will complement the nice top, bottom, shoes, handbag and your accessories.
Because?
BECAUSE OF 1 NICE TOP. *smacks forehead with hand*

So you need to learn how to play around with your clothes abit.

If you succeed, you will get to save up a decent amount of money. (Isn’t this like the ultimate goal for this game?!)

So there, start thriftin people!
